Holy Year Pilgrimage 1975

Day 14 - Upper Beeding to Arundel

Our final day! And a return to the beginning! But, before the rest of us are awake, Mike has penned a poem in reflection.

We climbed from Bramber via Steyning Round Hill to Chanctonbury Ring, where the map was carefully studied.

Then lunch on the top of Kithurst Hill.

Fr Hans Burgman, Fr Bill's pilgrimage mentor

Here we were joined by Michael Bowen, Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, and his dog Jamie.

Our final church for prayers was at South Stoke

and Bishop Michael walked with us

through Arundel Park - where we spontaneously joined hands, leading in turn to another Ring-a-Ring-of-Roses, where even the Bishop fell down

back to the Cathedral, where Bishop Michael concelebrated Mass, where we learnt that we'd received a congratulatory telegram from the Vatican!

Then, after refreshments in St Mary's Hall, around 6.30 on a Sunday evening, we dispersed. None of the celebrations of later years, but we knew we'd completed something special.
