The Pilgrims Way 1976

Day 13 - Charing to Canterbury

So, today we start with prayers at Ss Peter & Paul, our overnight neighbour

An hour and a half, and we're praying again at the ruined church at Eastwell, next to a lake. Well off the road, it's a peaceful place.

Then a short walk to Boughton Lees, and prayers at St Christophers

Then over the green to the Flying Horse for lunch

Our next stop was at Boughton Aluph Church for prayers; here we're leaving Boughton Aluph

through the orchards of the garden of England

I'm sure they were windfalls they picked up...

Then, via Chilham, we reached Harbledown, the hill outside Canterbury, where we waited for everyone to gather in the setting sun

As we came down, we got our first view of the Cathedral (and road works on the A2; how unusual)

We all linked hands as we walked through Westgate Gardens, down the main street, and through Christchurch Gate into the Cathedral Close

and on into the Cathedral

Having prayed at St Thomas' shrine in the Cathedral, we made our way the short distance to St Thomas' RC Church hall, our final overnight stop. Unless I'm much mistaken, we celebrated a late evening mass in the lady chapel at Thomas' Church, which had a very special atmosphere.
