The Pilgrims Way 1976

Day 8 - Merrow to Dorking

A welcome shorter day on the schedule! Again, we celebrated Mass before setting out, this time at St Pius X church, Merrow.

Pilgrims are supposed to follow the arrows, but also to use their intelligence when the front marker directs them through rather than round the ford. Maybe Joan was just cooling her feet?

Anyway, it wasn't much further to the White Horse at Shere and lunch.

Followed by prayers at the church, St James, opposite.

From Shere it was up onto the Downs again. But Downs mean views over the weald

and tiered seating for the viewers

The North Downs Way brought us to the village of Westcott outside Dorking, and Holy Trinity Church for prayers.

Our stop for the night was at St Josephs, Dorking, where Mike displayed his "arrow stick" pointing to Arundel, Winchester and Canterbury.

That evening, we had a sing song in the hall. I don't know that this was the first, but it's the first I've found on record!
