The Glastonbury Pilgrimage 1978

Day 11 - Salisbury to Steeple Langford / Wylye

Before leaving Salisbury, we celebrated Mass at St Osmund's, next door to the school.

We then walked through the streets of Salisbury

To the church of Sarum St Thomas for prayers.

Then it was a climb up to the ancient site of Old Sarum, with its earthworks. Here we are preparing for an open air prayer stop on the foundations of the ancient cathedral.

What goes up must come down, so here we're scrambling down from Old Sarum (the equivalent picture of bottoms as we climbed up was somewhat inelegant).

Lunch was a peaceful setting at the Bridge Inn at Upper Woodford. Well, it was peaceful for some. My brother Mark was thrown into the river (by the girls).

After lunch comes thanksgiving, at St Andrew's Church, Great Durnford

Our route took a dog-leg (inspired by Snoopy?) to visit Stonehenge - in the days before fences!

From Stonehenge we headed west, stopping for refreshments at Druid's Lodge

then praying at St James' church, Berwick St James

and at All Saints, Steeple Langford

before reaching Hanging Langford Hall, where we ate and where many stayed the night. Others, however, had to walk a further 2 miles to Wylye, but saved it the next day.
