The Glastonbury Pilgrimage 1978

Day 7 - Freshwater to Brockenhurst

Today we leave the island again, from Yarmouth, but the day starts heading away from Yarmouth and up hill to St Saviour's Church at Totland for Mass.

After Mass we descend to Totland Bay with its pier (and views to Hurst Castle, not shown)

Our route then followed the coast round to Yarmouth, where rather than visiting a pub for lunch, we prayed at St James's church then picnicked in the Rectory garden, a relaxing interlude while we awaited our ferry.

Our route off the island was via the ageing car ferry (now replaced, though you still walk on and off via the vehicle ramps)

Arriving at Lymington mid afternoon, our day is only half complete. At Boldre we were treated to tea on the lawn outside this school

before praying at St John's

Another hour's walk brought us to Brockenhurst Park and St Nicholas's church

From here it was just a short walk to Brockenhurst College, where we stayed in the new sports hall. This had no cooking facilities, so we got fish and chips brought in.

This evening we were visited by Bishop Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, newly appointed as Bishop of Arundel & Brighton, and we all retired to the pub opposite.
