The 2nd Canterbury Pilgrimage 1979

Day 2: Seaford to Eastbourne

Second day - we wake to rain! At least it's a shorter walk.

The trouble with rainy days in August is deciding whether to put the waterproofs on: as this picture shows, the range of responses to this challenge varies!

Our route took us out over Seaford head to the west side of Cuckmere Haven, where the Cuckmere river meanders its way to the sea. We then turned inland, to Exceat Bridge (the first bridge over the river) and the Golden Galleon pub for lunch. I seem to recall that they were not over keen to have a horde of grubby pilgrims cluttering up their pub on a busy Sunday lunchtime, so we had to sit on the grass beyond the tables (reserved for proper customers!)

Still, Mike didn't let it get him down.

We then headed back to the coast - the east bank of Cuckmere Haven (within sight of where we'd been mid-morning!). We then retraced the steps of our first pilgrimage (but in reverse) across the Seven Sisters (this time with a stop for tea at Birling Gap), past Belle Tout (below) and Beachy Head and down into Eastbourne.

The sun was decidedly on our backs as we walked along the beach / promenade

But for some, the temptation of a deck chair was just too great!

The van being unloaded signalled our arrival at St Joseph's School.
