The Buckfast Pilgrimage 1980

Day 10: Burton Bradstock to Lyme Regis

The distance might be shorter but the hills are getting bigger!

Despite the rain earlier on, the weather was now quite hot and sunny, and my nose was starting to suffer. We engineered a nose protector from an arrow...

Our route took us past Burton Bradstock, over Burton Cliff and East Cliff and down into West Bay, where we stopped to pray at St John's Church (helpfully labelled)

Bill just couldn't resist the cockles on sale on the quayside

Up over Wet Cliff and down to Eype Mouth and its hotel for lunch.

And then ... UP again!

Up to Thorncombe Beacon, then down into Seatown (in the foreground) before the massive climb to Golden Cap - the highest coastal cliff in southern England at 618 feet.

We did survive, then dropped down again before climbing up to Cain's Folly, where we could look back to Golden Cap.

Then down to Charmouth, and the bridge over the Char.

Finally, it was up and over Timber Hill before descending into Lyme Regis via its quaint little streets.

Which brought us to the Woodmead Halls - rather rickety buildings which were due to be replaced, but at least provided a roof over our heads (just!)
