The Buckfast Centenary Pilgrimage 1982

Day 10: Bridport to Lyme Regis

Bill warned us not to be misled by the shorter distance today, as there were plenty of hills!

Best to conserve energy when ferrying the luggage therefore!

Luxury - a 9.30 start, with Holy Communion in the church next door.

And under an hour to our first prayer stop, where I remember playing hopscotch - presumably this is the school playground rather than the road.

Next stop, again not far away, was the Catholic Chapel at Chideock, famed for its martyrs who died in Dorchester. Fr John Comilius, Thomas Bosgrove, John Carey, Patrick Salmon, and Fr Hugh Green were beatified on 15th December 1929.

Here we celebrated Mass.

And so to lunch, at the Clock Inn on the A35 in the village.

The food on offer here was memorable, though a bit pricey so pilgrims shared dishes.

After lunch, prayers at St Giles.

At Seatown, Golden Cap appears before you - the highest coastal cliff in Southern England.

Probably for the first time, Bill had to take a day off from walking today, but he and Snoopy hiked up to Golden Cap with drinks which were most welcome.

Up and down we went - down to sea level at Charmouth where we crossed the river Char.

Then up again to Timber Hill before the long descent into Lyme Regis. Here we were due to stay in the new hall - but it wasn't finished...

...so we were back in the old hall (as in 1980) whose demolition had been delayed so that we had some roof over our heads.
