The Papal Pilgrimage 1982P

Day 4: Dorking to Addlestone

Out of Dorking heading north, you're bound to go up! But as you ascend the North Downs, you cross the ancient Pilgrims' Way to Canterbury (as walked in 1976)

And at the top, on Ranmore Common, is St Barnabas, a stop for prayer.

Down off the downs again to Little Bookham, and the Olde Windsor Castle (where we'd been turned away in 1977, but presumably there'd be a change of manager since).

There were pilgrims of all ages on this pilgrimage, this little one named after the Pope himself.

The afternoon was flatter and took us across some busy roads south west of London. First of all, the A3 at Wisley Common (thank goodness for the bridge!)

And for the cafe on the far side!

Beyond Wisley we encountered the construction site for the M25 London Orbital.

But also the peace of the Wey Navigation

Also the peace of St Mary's, Byfleet, an old church in a relatively modern housing estate.

Further along the Navigation, Terri the Drink met us - a welcome sight!

And so, to St George's College (our third visit).
