The Lindisfarne Pilgrimage 1984

Day 2: York to Wigginton

Our first official walking day is a fairly leisurely affair, just as well after yesterday's travelling. Pilgrims gather ready outside the school.

Our first stop, for prayers, is Cliffords Tower, where York's Jews had been massacred in less tolerant times.

As a tower on a small hill, it affords a good view of the city.

We then had free time in York, followed by mass at the Catholic parish church of St Wilfrid, before we gathered in the Lady Chapel of York Minster. As this picture shows, the Minster was in a sad state following a serious fire (caused by lightning) earlier in the year.

We lunched at The Olde Starre Inn in Stanegate - the oldest pub in York they say - before leaving York by the most circuitous route possible - circumnavigating the city walls. Views of the Minster were ever present.

But eventually we broke free from York's magnetic attraction, and stopped for drinks under the old railway bridge (which crosses both road and river at this point, revisited in 2002).

We then passed within sniffing distance of Rowntree's chocolate factory before stopping for prayers at Huntington (also visited in 2002) before reaching our night's halt at Wiggington - surprisingly tired after so few miles!

Once there, we planned the morrow's liturgy...

..before adjourning to  local pub for a sing-up!
