The Lindisfarne Pilgrimage 1984

Day 9: Stanhope to Minsteracres

First sighting today - the dramatic, water-filled Greenfoot Quarry..

First church - All Saints, Eastgate.

Then we climbed...

.. to the top of Bolts Law - the highest point of this pilgrimage (and, I think, ever)

Then over the top in bright sunshine...

before a gradual descent...

to Hunstanworth and St James' Church.

Here's our photographer proving the point.

Lunch was at the Lord Crewe Arms - famous for appearing on table mats and calendars. Still, they let us in!

After time to explore and Mass at the Abbey, we climbed again, on the road,  past Derwent Reservoir to Minsteracres, the Diocesan Retreat Centre. On the way, we found a number of large "earthballs" - edible fungus, much to the delight of van driver Mike.

At Minsteracres we met up again with Nick and Claire - feeling a bit stressed they'd taken a day out to visit Durham. Mike asked them to buy a cassette recorder, which they did. However, having taken it away they sat in a park awaiting their lift and discovered - NO BLOODY MAINS LEAD. They recorded a message for Mike - and "still no bloody mains lead" lives on in Pilgrimage memory.
