DAY THREE Tewkesbury to Great Malvern

So, our second day walking and we're off bright and early for our 17.5 mile trek to Great Malvern.

We hadn't gone far before we got to our first stop at St Joseph's church for morning prayers.

After this short stop, we set off over the countryside, following both the river and canal for a while before setting off over the hills . . .

. . . and through the wheat . . .

. . . and to our first drinks stop, where Patrick decided that Lauren should have some fruit flan from the previous night.

Lauren however disagreed.

Next was the prayer stop at Longdon . . .

. . . where Jack found much rest along with many others.

Lauren and Kevin led the stop, telling us about their experiences during their gap year. This had mainly been a very positive experience for them, but they focussed on several examples of exploitation they had come across and how it is the responsibility of everyone to fight against such things.

Off again and the Malvern hills, which we were dreading climbing, were starting to look fairly scary in the distance.

But before that came a welcome lunch at the Plume of Feathers where Patrick really was preparing for those scary hills . . .

. . . and others were topping up with energy in other ways.

After lunch we headed off along a track . . .

. . . and through some painful corn fields. Well, at least someone was having fun . . .

. . . and then to Little Malvern Priory, where Keith shared his thoughts on how, on the pilgrimage, we travel light with only fairly essential items and related this to everyday life and the global situation.

Then just up the road to St Wulstan's for a lively Mass.

The grave of Sir Edward Elgar is in the churchyard there.

Finally, those dreaded hills had arrived. After the sharp, steep slope, what Sue had said the night before about it being worth going to the top finally sank in.

At the top, Robert and Bruce were resting on a monument commemorating Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee.

And from there, we could see tomorrow morning's stop of Malvern Priory.

Then, after nearly killing ourselves by running down the hill (there wasn't much choice, it was so steep), we arrived at The Chase Technology College for a good night's sleep.
