DAY FIVE Bromyard to Leominster

Another day began with the usual rush to get everything sorted, packed and on the van.

A slightly later departure time today (8.55), but after several days walking, it didn't seem late.

However, it was an easy start to the day, with just over half a mile to our first stop, St Joseph's RC Church, where we were most of the congregation at a parish mass.

Again, the terrain for the day was very up and down. Bridget worked out that best way t0 get down was to become an aeroplane and glide.

The weather was also pretty typical - sunshine and heavy showers.

Mud was another feature of the day: sometimes quite easily passable . . .

. . . at other times, only with more difficulty.

With a lot of footpath walking, sometimes drink stops have to be on busy roads, but Ann ensured our safety by warning drivers of walkers in the road.

As we approached Pencombe, St John's church was visible over the trees . . .

. . . but our first port of call was at the Wheelwright's Arms for lunch.

We went on to the church after lunch, where the vicar welcomed us and and shared with us his reflections on homelessness.

It was also a bit of a reunion, as the vicar and his wife had previously met some of our pilgrims on the Compostela pilgrim route, so they reassembled for a photo.

In the afternoon, it was sunny (for a time).

We stepped from peak to peak as we crossed stubbly ploughed fields.

There were also horses . . .

. . . and a bridge for Pooh Sticks.

Our second church stop of the afternoon was at St Mary the Virgin, Humber. Mary led the stop on the theme of prayer.

Just over a mile more walking (there seemed to be a lot of stiles today) . . .

. . . took us to our final church of the day, St Luke's, Stoke Prior, where we were told about the inspiring life of Father Jeremy Leah, who had worked both in this country and Peru.

Another three miles, with more rain, took us to our hall for tonight . . .

. . . which was indeed a welcome sight.

After four days of hard walking, I think all of us are glad that we now have a rest day.
