Day 16: Journey Home

Amazingly, our last day was here. In some ways it seems hardly any time at all since we gathered in Canterbury two weeks ago, while in another way it seems that we have been walking for ever and that bedding down in a sleeping bag on a hard floor (a different hard floor most nights) is the normal way of life.

So, it was a day of 'lasts' - at least until next year. Here, Bridget packs her things up for the last time in the Milner Hall choir loft while the morning sunshine (plenty of that today) streams through the stained glass.

And the van is packed for the last time - not with pilgrims' individual luggage but with the vast array of equipment which supports us and provides us with some degree of home comfort each evening, such as the all important tea and coffee urn.

With all jobs complete, there is time for quiet reflection (noisy reflection would be too tiring) as the Parish Mass is not until 10.30.

I had the chance to take a closer look at this statue beside the path between our two halls.

Others chose to play the piano (accessible now that the hall is cleared) . . .

. . . to exercise the mind with Soduko puzzles (this year's craze, especially amongst the youngsters) . . .

. . . or to catch up with what's been happening in the world beyond our pilgrimage.

Many pilgrims began their journeys home not long after breakfast, but a significant number joined with the large congregation at the Parish Mass at St Peter's, where we received a public welcome from the priest before Father David explained a little of the history of the pilgrimage to the parishioners.

After the service, we stood outside in the sunshine for a farewell chat, before the Winchester pilgrimage ended, as the remaining pilgrims dispersed by car or train.

Although the pilgrimage is now over, there are many things from these two weeks we will carry back into our various and varied everyday lives - including piles of damp, smelly washing.
