Walking in the Footsteps of the Lord - Wells to Arundel 2007

Day 9: Totland to Brighstone

Continuing the IoW coast route that we started yesterday, we head out to the Needles (well, nearly!) and back via Tennyson Down to Freshwater Bay - very close to where we started the day! We then follow the Tennyson Trail along the backbone of the island, with the coast always in sight, to a point above Brighstone before dropping down to our destination. (Oh yes, we drop down to pray at Brook too).

Our day started with Mass at St Saviour's church, just next to the school we were sleeping in.

After Mass there were a few repair jobs before we could set off.

Lots of parishioners took an interest in what we were up to.

These locals walk or have walked with St Francis Ramblers, like many pilgrims.

We headed west towards the Needles, getting view across the Solent to Hurst Castle.

Looking back to the coloured sands of Alum Bay.

The catering team had a little outing - and it involved walking!

The views of the Needles are always worth the walk - even in fresh blustery conditions.

John is concerned that Tomtom has taken him to a dead end.

I'm sure you're supposed to pose with rather than in front of the place of interest.

The front marking team now heading East.

Climbing towards the Tennyson Monument on Tennyson Down.

Posers!

Looking back towards the Needles - lots of dotty pilgrims.

The butterflies which love chalk downland.

It proved too fresh to stay at the top, so we descend in a big cluster

Lunch spot at Freshwater Bay - we're running early.

Others found alternative venues.

Jean and Bruce have to make a decision.

Bad move dozing off and leaving your camera around...
