Magnificat - Evesham to Salisbury 2008

Day 13: Pewsey to Amesbury

We climb past the Pewsey White Horse, then head across downland to lunch. After that we stick close to the bottom of the valley of the Avon, apart from a smallish hill at the end.

This image from last evening shows the photo selection committee in operation.

Ceri and Marie make sure the hall is left clean.

We celebrated the eucharist at the neighbouring Methodist church, and were chased out by back-marker Howard. Proud of his Methodist heritage, he stayed to clean the church.

Leaving Pewsey.

Joyce and Michael lead the pack through the back lanes of Pewsey.

Gamble Bros ride the White Horse

Normal pilgrims stagger up the slippery slope beside the Whte Horse.

View back from above the White Horse.

At the top we joined the road.

We are crossing Salisbury Plain, a military training area, evidenced by warning signs.

Tank crossing on the Andover-Upavon road. Mark and Chris are walking with the tank.

The track was mostly gravel, but there was still a helping of muddy puddles.

Lunch at the Swan, Enford - Ant and a steak baguette.

Mark, Chris and a couple of beers.

The rolls were eaten away from the pub.

The profiteroles were eaten in the pub.

Scenic location - shame about the grey weather.

Maurice, recovered from his earlier fall, accompanies Henriette.

Howard and Theresa show how it should be done.

The Army is in evidence, both on the ground and in the air - this Merlin was among the Lynx, Gazelle and Chinooks we saw (and heard) above us (or below us, when we were on the ridge).

All Saints Fittleton.

We teach pilgrims what KISSING GATES are for...

Martyn makes the most of it!

Theresa and Howard - been there, done that.

Gentlemen!

Mark led moving reflection.

The vicar welcomed and blessed us.

Aruna leads us from the church.

Ann in the lead on the next field.

A pretty Wiltshire cottage.

Army at speed on the ground (a 432 Armoured Personnel Carrier Martyn tells me).

Weaving through the mud

Mike and Jonny hold the wire that obstructs the path.

St Leonard's, Bulford - the tail is led in.

Steeple Jack?

Manure from heaven?
