NEWS OF LINDISFARNE

This year’s pilgrimage is now finally upon us — the first since Fr Bill Haynes handed over the job of organising to a new team led by Alice and Antony Morwood-Leyland and Monsignor Pat Olivier. The main pilgrim party leaves the picturesque location of Crawley railway station on Friday 17th August. Non travelling pilgrims are invited along to our first “God stop" at St. Francis and St. Anthony, Haslett Avenue, at 1.30 pm that day. The formal start is at St. George’s, Margaret Street, York at 7.30 pm Mass. There will be a wealth of historical interest on our journey, Roman, Saxon, Christian v Pagan, Christian v Jew, the War of the Roses, Scottish border raids and the founding of the constituent members of what is now the URC. Among our celebrations we are looking forward to a barbeque at Minsteracres, our own version of Matins at Hexham Abbey, an interdenominational party at Rothbury and an “open table” Eucharist at a URC church. The going will be fairly tough but Aidan Simons has been calculating generous walking times which hopefully will enable all of us to keep up.

CAYA, GLASTONBURY AND AYLESFORD

The 5th National CAYA Rally entitled “Peace Be with You” is to be held on Sunday October 14th at the City Hall in Sheffield. The theme for the day will be “Justice and Peace”. Further details can be obtained from the Diocesan Youth Office.

During May of this year approximately 3,500 people from Southern England and Wales gathered in Glastonbury; the theme was “Go and rebuild my Church”. Each diocese performed music, dance and drama and Arundel and Brighton’s effort was (naturally) on the topic of pilgrimage.

On July 1st, another 2,000 went to the Annual Aylesford Youth Day. Although there were contingents from Clifton, Nottingham and Plymouth, a small group from Epsom and Dorking were the only A & B representatives (such a long way to go!) However, they distinguished themselves by singing the Hells Angel song for the edification of Catholic youth. Did you know that they always end Mass with “Rise and Shine"? Cardinal Hume gave an excellent sermon on the subject of appreciating the apparent need for despair in the present world but not despairing because of our faith in a risen Christ, a man who bridged the tangible and intangible, the temporal and the permanent.
