Day 1: Arundel to Pulborough

Our pilgrimage began on the Sunday prior to the Pope's visit, with Mass at Arundel Cathedral. As we prepared to set off, we were filmed by Southern TV.

We set off, past the Cathedral...

...past the entrance to Arundel Castle...

... down the High Street, over the bridge, and along the bank of the River Arun (our companion for the first few days).

First stop, the George & Dragon at Burpham for lunch

Followed by prayers at St Mary the Virgin; by now it's raining!

... and up on the South Downs it was wetter still

We descended to Parham Park, where the sun had come out, and we dried off in the sunshine, before entering St Peter's for a mid-afternoon Holy Communion service..

An hour or so later we stopped to pray at Wiggonholt Church.

We then rejoined the River Arun for the walk into Pulborough
