The Jubilee Pilgrimage of Hope 2024

Day 11: Rest Day in Goring

It's our second rest day but where are we staying exactly? We are in Goring-by-Sea United Reformed Church but right next door are Durrington-on-Sea railway station and Worthing Leisure Centre! Our main event today is located one mile to the west of the hall in the English Martyrs Catholic Church which is definitely in Goring-by-Sea. This church is famous as its ceiling has been painted as a copy of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Therefore we will be attending the parish mass at 09.30 and after that we have arranged a tour to fully appreciate the ceiling. Pilgrims could stop off at the launderette on the way there or on the way back. See details below. There are other launderettes in different directions but slightly further. The leisure centre is next door but it does not have a swimming pool. For those wanting a swim, the beach (pebbles not sand) is ¾ of a mile to the South or you can catch the train to Worthing and go to the Splashpoint Leisure Centre close to the sea front. Those wanting an excursion could catch the train to Brighton or other places.

God creates woman is the central painting at Goring English Martyrs church (no sign of Adam's rib) Michael McCabe

Painting of Gary Bevans painting the painting. It took him 5.5 years compared with the 4 years it took Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo had apprentices working for him, while Gary had to paint in his spare time. His profession was sign-writing. Michael McCabe

The fake organ at English Martyrs church in Goring (no joking!) Michael McCabe

The ceiling is a 2/3 scale reproduction of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. The edge of the painting is actually the windows and walls of the Sistine chapel, because the Sistine chapel has different proportions. Michael McCabe
