Day 3: Kirklevington to Croft-on-Tees

The morning walk traverses farmland with church stops at Worsall and Girsby. Please shut gates when we pass through Fardeanside farmyard. We descend to cross the River Tees at Girsby Bridge into the ceremonial County of Durham at the Sockburn peninsula. We walk along Sockburn lane, joining the Teesdale Way. Beware of Giant Hogweed on the river path into Neasham. After lunch we walk along the road to Hurworth on Tees, where there is a memorial to plague victims on the village green. Following the Teesdale Way, the walk crosses back over the river at Croft-on-Tees. Take great care when crossing the main road here for prayers at the medieval church of St Peter, where Lewis Carroll's father was once Rector. A replica of the “Conyers Falchion” sword, used to slay the legendary “Sockburn Worm”, is presented to new Bishops of Durham, on entry to the Diocese at the bridge at Croft-on-Tees.
