The Buckfast Pilgrimage 1980

Day 4: Winchester to Romsey

A brighter morning dawned, and we returned to the Cathedral

Although we had celebrated Mass at the High Altar in 1976, this time we were given the use of  the Stephen Gardiner Chantry, where we celebrated in pilgrim style.

Out of Winchester across the water meadows to St Cross Hospital.

Here we received the "Wayfarers' Dole" a tot of beer which pilgrims of old received to help them on their way (I bet they didn't get plastic cups though!).

We then continued following the River Itchen

to Allbrook, where we lunched at the Victoria Inn.

(It is reputed that Patrick went on to disgrace himself at a local fruiterers: the details must remain safe with those who were there)

After what seemed like a long trek through the middle of Chandlers Ford, we reached St John the Baptist, North Baddesley, where we prayed.

A couple more hours and we reached Romsey, where we were staying at La Sagesse Convent.
