This day dawned wet though, boosted by some locals and some boys from St George's College (our destination) we put on a cheery show for the press.
By the time we reached Ash and the church of St Michael and All Angels, we were well and truly soaked! Bill led us on, in the outfit that got him nicknamed "Captain Birdseye".
We had to cross Ash Army Ranges in a lull in firing while the soldiers ate. Our lunch was on the far side, soup served by Jean Simons from a motor caravan.
There followed a long afternoon, alongside the Basingstoke Canal and across Horsell Common to St Georges.
