DAY ELEVEN Brighton to Worthing Another sunny day and another walk along the sea front. Soon we were at St Richard's Church, Hangleton, an Anglican Church that did a very good impression of being Roman Catholic. During the mass, some pilgrims who had just joined us were presented with their crosses. By this stage in the pilgrimage, tired and blistered feet are becoming a problem, but local resources can be out to good use, as demonstrated by the Gamble brothers. Further pleasant walking followed. And soon it was lunchtime at Devil's Dyke Inn, from where we were able to get a close-up view of the para-gliders. The backmarkers took the opportunity to restock the frontmarkers with drawing pins and arrows. We continued to enjoy each others company as we walked across the Downs. The main feature of the afternoon was a special double prayer stop. First we gathered at St Botolph's Church. Inside, we were told a little about the life of Father John Medcalf, a much loved and respected Roman Catholic priest who worked in the Arundel & Brighton Diocese, but who also spent many years working in Peru, Nicaragua and El Salvador, where he was known as Padre Juan. Father John died unexpectedly in July 2002. From St Botolph's, we processed, singing a song in Spanish, for just under a mile to Coombes Church, where his ashes had been scattered. Here a bench in his memory was blessed. A further six miles took us to our hall for the night - Offington Park Methodist Church. I found a piano and tinkled and so this report's posted a day late - sorry folks! |
