We leave Lancaster on the Lancaster Canal which will follow us all the way to Kendal altough the final section is now drained. It was famous for its lack of locks. We reach the coast and make our way along it on the edge of the saltmarshes on the Lancashire Coastal Way to our lunchstop in the busy market town of Carnforth; whoses station was made famous as the film set for "Brief Encounter". After lunch we enter an area of outstanding natural beauty as we start to climb and enjoy a viewpoint over Morecambe Bay just before we reach Arnside for our overnight. Before the railways, early travellers would have approached the Lake District via the old coach route across the sands of Morecambe Bay to Grange-Over-Sands, but we are taking a (hopefully) more solid coast path to Arnside.
