The Glastonbury Pilgrimage 1978

Day 2: Chichester to Hayling Island

Second day, Sunday, starts with the parish Mass at St Richard's, next door to the school

with it's stained glass window depicting St Richard

Then it's into town to the Cathedral for prayers at St Richard's shrine. Even Snoopy was there.

We then pause outside the Cathedral while the front markers get ahead.

Lunch is at The Bosham on the A27, a very up market pub / restaurant, who kindly agreed to have us (there being little alternative en route, we were cooperative and stayed on the grass away from the customers in their Rolls Royces etc). At this stage we were unaware of the havoc to be caused by the young man in the foreground...

Our route took us round the edge of Chichester harbour

At the border of Sussex and Hampshire, also the boundary between Arundel & Brighton and Portsmouth Dioceses, we were welcomed by youngsters from Portsmouth Diocese, who were to walk with us.

I rather suspect that these pictures of puddle jumping were taken during planning, but we certainly walked along the harbour wall at Emsworth.

At Warblington, the parish were out in force to greet us, with tea and sandwiches - very welcome!

After Warblington we left the mainland for Hayling Island over Langstone Bridge, then followed the old railway line for the length of the island.

Eventually we reached St Francis' School, in the village of Hayling Island.

The school was in Beach Road, and thus close to the sea. That evening a number of us went and swam by moonlight.
