The Pilgrims Way 1976

Day 9 - Dorking to Caterham

Usual routine. Mass (this time at St Joseph's) then off. Judging by the jackets, it was a cooler morning.

Lunch was at the Hand in Hand at Box Hill, memorable for the number of beverages that were already sold out (bad news for thirsty pilgrims)

Following the North Downs brought us to Colley Hill, and its view over Betchworth quarries

There's a Victorian drinking fountain on Reigate Hill, where Bill lined us up for a picture

Also to point out the stone marking the ancient Pilgrims Way.

Here we were met by the St Francis Catholic Rambling Club (recognise anyone? I'm sure you do)

Pilgrims don't pass by a chance for refreshment - here at the cafe at the Reigate Hill car park

Down the hill to Gatton and the Royal Alexandra and Albert School, where we stopped to pray in their chapel. Yes, it must be raining again

Our route passed alongside and over the "new" M25. Bet you've never seen it with so little traffic!

And so, over the hill to Caterham. In these days, few of our halls had anything but minimal washing facilities, and local people were asked to offer baths and showers to weary pilgrims, which they often did. I mention it here because I know that such offers were made (and gratefully accepted) at Caterham.
