The Lindisfarne Pilgrimage 1984

Day 12: Hexham to Cambo

So, after a day off, back to the slog. Stunning scenery, but hard work. The initial climb took us to Heavenfield where Christian Oswald defeated Penda.

Crossing Hadrian's Wall, we entered barbarian country!

The big advantage of hills is the view from the top.

Not to mention the descent...

Pilgrims comparing notes...

After lunch we celebrated Mass at St Mary's, Swinburne.

A hilly afternoon - the rest was deserved!

We were clearly getting a lecture - I wish I could remember the context. I think it was below St Aidan's.

And so to St Aidan's Church, Thockrington

Eventually we reached Cambo - a village owned by the National Trust. A village without a pub! But at least there was a village hall to sleep in! (Julie reminds me that not only was there no pub, but it was strictly a dry village. After a tough day's walk that was rubbing salt into the wounds of many pilgrims!)
